This collection of names is based on recordings and recollections of the local people of north Lewis. Although life was hard and materially poor, these people were outside, working and playing in the land around them, naming every small piece of coastline and hill as they went about their daily lives. Today experiences are very different. The last generation to have really lived in and known every nook and cranny of the physical landscape is fast passing away, and the names for most of these places goes with them.
