Notes:
Dr Sally Foster delivered the Annual Academic Lecture for Groam House Museum on 4 May 2001. Dr Foster explores the debate surrounding where sculpture should be preserved and the issues the stem from the practice of retaining it “in situ” or in association with it’s historical findspot. Her starting point was the polar views of General Pitt Rivers, Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Britain and Joseph Anderson, Keeper of the National Museum of Antiquities at the end of the 19th century, progressing to the present day policies and practice. Dr Foster’s illustrated text is now published.
