22 June 1941 is a date that will echo throughout eternity, for it marks the beginning of a savage existential struggle between two of the mightiest armies ever to storm a battlefield. Having brought Western Europe to heel, in that fateful summer Nazi Germany turned its gaze eastwards to the lands of the Soviet Union. Certain of victory, Hitler unleashed an invasion force of 3.8 million men with the aim of annihilating Stalin's forces, carving up the lands he once ruled and condemning millions of people to slavery or death by starvation in the frozen wastes of Siberia. Only the Red Army stood between the Third Reich and total supremacy in Europe. The world would hold its breath as two former allies clashed in a war that would slaughter millions and reshape the world for decades to come.
